How to use OldGround
A complete guide to the app, from lining up your first old map to sharing a find.
1Getting startedFive tabs, one map. Here’s where everything lives and the fastest way to your first hunt.2The mapSatellite, topo, streets and bare-earth LiDAR, with your old map on top. Four ways to compare them: Overlay, Swipe, Split and Drive.3Old mapsImport a scan of a plat map, county atlas or old topo and line it up with today’s map by matching a few landmarks. It then sits right on top, with your position on it.4Pins and findsMark finds, old houses, LiDAR features and permissions exactly where they are. Finds keep photos, depth, signal and detector, and the app can walk you back to any pin.5Sites and visitsOutline each field, yard or park you hunt. Finds inside belong to it automatically, and every trip is a visit with your time, your path and what you found.6PermissionsGet permission in writing: the landowner signs a simple slip on your phone and gets a PDF copy. Keep their number and a log of your calls, get warned before it runs out, and send them a report of your finds.7Finds, pins and tracksEvery find in one place, grouped by site, with quick filters for silver, gold, coins and your best finds. Export everything as GPX.8CommunityShare your best finds and favourite detecting videos, upvote and comment. Anyone can read it on the website; posting is in the app. Your locations are never shared.9SettingsUnits, your detector, path recording, keeping the screen on, public land, offline areas and exporting.10GPS and accuracyWhat your phone’s GPS can and can’t do, and how to get the most accurate pins.11QuestionsSubscriptions, offline use, backups and getting help.
